Are We Being Misunderstood? The Things We Say Without Saying a Word
Are We Being Misunderstood? The Things We Say Without Saying a Word
Have you ever said something completely innocent only to discover that the other person heard something entirely different?
In this episode of Our Friendly World, Fawn and Matt explore the hilarious, frustrating, and sometimes exhausting ways we misunderstand one another. From zucchini at the farmers market and Matt's infamous “Good for you” to facial expressions that apparently say the exact opposite of what Fawn is thinking, we share some of our own communication faux pas and the lessons we've learned from them.
But underneath the laughter is a bigger question: How much of what happens between people is actually about us and how much is about what the other person is carrying?
We talk about assumptions, body language, context, tone, empathy, social exhaustion, and the simple practice of taking a moment before deciding what someone else meant.
Because we never really know what is happening inside another person.
And sometimes, a little patience, a little context, and a little curiosity can completely change the story.
Come laugh with us, cringe with us, and maybe recognize a little bit of yourself along the way.
Are we the only ones who do this? Please tell us we're not.
